Developed a family of symbols with each representing one of the five human senses in their noun form. I designed 5 root symbols and then expanded the symbol system’s ability to be versatile.
Initially, I wanted to do really abstract symbols with wispy lines, but after some research, I realized that I should refrain from leaning into the aesthetics too much. So I chose to do a practical but illustrative approach. I aimed to draw something that can be easily connected to the rest of the system, instead of letting all the nouns be separated. I maintained consistency by using the same line weight and curved silhouette style throughout.
I selected the eye symbol to designate as a root for further exploration. From this selection, I created three new symbols (and meanings) that would still be considered part of the system.
My assigned scenario was the Children's Zoo. The style I chose for my symbols are more on the illustrative side, so it makes perfect sense to associate that with something youthful and playful. I took on a challenge by choosing to do a harder referent; the amphitheater. This one was hard because it is easily misinterpreted due to the shape of the seating area. But the butterfly garden and bird watching referents came along well enough.
I also applied directional symbols to it to show how it could be portrayed in a public space.
I enjoyed creating these symbols since I could develop my own illustrative style through it. The colors and line weight bring a sense of whimsy to it that would look fun in a children's zoo.
